Welcome to RADD! > RADD History
The Cerebral Palsy Agency of Racine County Inc. was founded in 1954 by a group of concerned civic leaders and parents, for the purpose of addressing the needs of persons with Cerebral Palsy. Initially, an Orthopedic Clinic was the only service that was offered by the agency.
Over the years, as other medical services became available, the focus of the agency shifted to social and recreational programs that would facilitate fuller participation in the community through leisure/ recreational activities. With this shift, came the expansion to include individuals with all developmental disabilities. Two of the original programs included Sunshine Club and Respite Weekends.
Camp Kinder was founded by Mrs. Helen Witte in 1969, in response to the lack of local summer day camps available to young people with disabilities. The camp, for many years, was staffed by parents and volunteers originally being held at Island Park. Camp Kinder is now held out in Franksville, at Franksville Park.
In 2004, the agency adopted the nickname RADD (Recreational Activities for the Developmentally Disabled) to be more reflective of the clientele that we serve. Today, the agency has grown to include over 350 participants.
